Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) is provided free of charge to UCSF faculty, staff, students and researchers. SEP is designed to (1) detect, remove and prevent the spread of viruses, spyware and other security risks and (2) provide Windows, Mac and Linux computers with anti-virus (AV) and anti-spyware protection.

You can obtain the most recent virus definitions (alsoknown as protection files or pattern files) from Symantec in severalways. Running LiveUpdate (the first option below)is usually the easiest and most effective, but other options areavailable. Using one method of updating does not preclude theother. On the same computer, you can choose to schedule LiveUpdateautomatic updates, and also manually use LiveUpdate or run IntelligentUpdater whenever you wish to update your virus definitions.

LiveUpdate

UITS recommends scheduling LiveUpdate to automaticallyupdate your virus definitions daily. For instructions, see:

Additionally, you can run LiveUpdate any time you want to updateyour virus definitions.

Windows

  • In Symantec Endpoint Protection, on the left,click Live Update. The window will close automatically whenthe update is complete.
  • In Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, fromthe File menu, select LiveUpdate.... Ifnecessary, choose which way you will connect to the LiveUpdate server byclicking Configure.... If relevant to your version ofSAV/NAV, check the boxes that apply to what you wish to update (e.g.,virus definitions, LiveUpdate). Click Next. When the processis complete, click Finish.

Mac OS X

Note: Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) for MacOS X (10.5 through 10.7.x) is available from IUware (requires IndianaUniversity Network ID).

The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that youupdate your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly.

Symantec Endpoint Protection Definitions Download For Macbook Pro

In Mac OS X, from the Applications folder, open SymantecSolutions, and then click LiveUpdate. LiveUpdate willdownload the virus definitions from Symantec's site.

Intelligent Updater on the web

Symantec's Intelligent Updater is an alternative toLiveUpdate for obtaining the most recent virusdefinitions. Intelligent Updater is less convenient to use thanLiveUpdate, because it is a manual process. Additionally, it mayrequire a larger download, which may be inconvenient if you have a lowbandwidth connection.

To download and use Intelligent Updater, go to Symantec's VirusDefinitions & Security Updates page and follow these instructions:

Windows

  1. From the 'Select Product:' drop-down list at the top, chooseSymantec Endpoint Protection 12.1. Click VirusDefinitions next to the heading 'File-Based Protection(Traditional Antivirus)'.
  2. On the SymantecEndpoint Protection page, client installation downloads are sortedby platform (e.g., Windows 32- 64-bit). Locate the platform thatmatches your system, find the .exe file that supportsSymantec Endpoint Protection, and then double-click it todownload it to your hard drive. On your computer, locate thedownloaded .exe file, and then double-click it to run theIntelligent Updater.

Mac OS X

  1. From the 'Select Product:' drop-down list at the top, chooseSymantec AntiVirus for Macintosh 10.x. ClickVirus Definitions next to the heading 'File-Based Protection(Traditional Antivirus)'.
  2. On the AntiVirusfor Macintosh page, client installation downloads are sorted bythe type of processor the Mac has (PowerPC or Intel), the Mac OSversion, and the version of Norton or Symantec AntiVirus that the Macis running.

FTP

Symantec also maintains an FTP site:

  • For Windows, look in the following directory:

    Download the file with the format yyyymmdd-xxx-i32.exe(for 32-bit systems) or yyyymmdd-xxx-i64.exe (for 64-bitsystems), in which yyyy is the year, mm isthe month, and dd is the day. Always choose the filecreated most recently.

  • For Mac OS X, look in the following directory:

    Download the .zip with the formatNavM_Intel_Installer_yyyymmdd_US.hqx, whereyyyy is the year, mm is the month, anddd is the day. Always choose the file created mostrecently. Update files starting with NavM_Intel are forcurrent Norton and Symantec AntiVirus applications on IntelMacs. Files starting with NAVM9 are for Power PC andolder versions of these applications.

Anti-virus and endpoint protection

Install Symantec Endpoint Protection for home use: Mac

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) provides protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malware. Faculty and staff can download Symantec for free from our Software distribution page.

Symantec 12.1 for Mac requires a Mac desktop or laptop running Mac OS 10.5 or higher with an Intel processor and a minimum of 512 MB of RAM. To find your system specifications, click on the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen then choose About This Mac. Your computer's information will be displayed.

  1. Double click the Symantec Endpoint Protection.mpkg icon to begin the installation.
  2. Click Continue to run the program.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Read the software license agreement and then click Continue.
  5. Agree to the terms of the software license agreement.
  6. Choose Unmanaged for your client type. Click Continue.
  7. Click Install to begin the installation.
  8. If prompted, enter your computer's administrator passphrase. Click Install Software.
  9. You will need to close all other applications before installation can finalize. Ensure any opened documents are saved and then click Continue Installation.
  10. The installation progress will display. Installation may take several minutes to complete.
  11. When the installation is complete, click Log Out. Your computer will log you out of your account.
  12. When prompted, log back in to your account. The Symantec LiveUpdate window will open automatically and begin downloading updates. This may take several minutes to complete.
  13. Once the updates have been installed, you will see a summary window listing the updates. Click Quit to dismiss the window. Installation and updates are complete.
